Lakes in Switzerland

Switzerland is, quite simply, the water tower of Europe. The biggest rivers in Europe have their sources in Switzerland. Lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls: there's plenty to enjoy both in and on the water.

Lake Lugano
Lago di Lugano/Lake Lugano

Lake Lugano in Southern Switzerland reaches out its arms into Italy and is surrounded by numerous mountains offering panoramic views. Thanks to the mild Mediterranean climate, there are even citrus fruits and palm trees growing here. Take a boat ride to sample all that the region has to offer: charming little fishing villages, tourist attractions such as the “Swiss Miniature” Park and flower-filled parks.

Lake Lucerne
Lake Lucerne

Encircled by popular excursion mountains, Lake Lucerne is the lake with the greatest scenic variety in the country. It is somewhat reminiscent of a fjord landscape, yet remains characterised by a mild lake climate. Boat cruises on board five historic paddlewheel steamers and 15 elegant salon motor vessels count among the highlights of this region.

Lake Geneva- on the French and Swiss Border

Lake Geneve
The Celts called Lake Geneva "Large Water" or "Lem an", and it is to this day called Lac Léman in French. And it is large indeed. Regularly scheduled lake boats, historic paddle steamers and small ferries ply this 582-square-kilometer body of water.

 Lower lake (Untersee) and Rhine

Lower lake
Passengers boarding a boat in Schaffhausen, at the foot of the Munot fortress, will pass by Hohenklingen castle and the cultural and vegetable island of Reichenau, in order to reach Konstanz (D) on the upper shores of the Lower Lake and, a little later, Kreuzlingen on Lake Constance. A 50-kilometre trip along the High Rhine, between Schaffhausen and ‘Stein am Rhein’ and on the Lower Lake, lasts nearly 5 hours and rightly ranks as one of Europe’s most glorious boat trips.

Lake Constance

Lake Constance
Measuring 64 km in length and 12 km at it widest point, Lake Constance, which is sited at the tripoint of Switzerland/Germany/Austria, is the third largest lake in Central Europe. The rolling landscape, the mild climate and a plethora of water sport and other leisure activities are responsible for attracting many holidaymakers and day trippers to Lake Constance, especially in the summer months.
